Robert Gniewek (b. 1951, Detroit, Michigan) embraces the atmospheric quality of photography with depictions of city scenes at dusk that emphasize the artificial light produced by theater marquees, diners, and bars. He frequently paints cities including New York, Las Vegas, and Monaco and his work is held in public collections throughout the Midwest. He received both his B.F.A. and M.A. from Wayne State University in Detroit.
In 1979 I started work on a series of realist paintings based on urban landscape photographs I had shot in and around Detroit. Having been inspired by the work of the original Photorealist painters, I attempted to emulate their style while focusing on my own vision: that of the moody, atmospheric, urban night landscape. For the past 47 years, I have pursued this vision with ever increasing passion and effort.
My paintings are based on the information taken from several photographs of the same subject shot at varying shutter exposures to highlight the dark and the brightly lit areas of a particular scene. The final result is a composite of that information.
Through the years my work has evolved in technique and style, becoming more sophisticated in subject matter and composition while retaining a painterly, soft-focus look that helps create an atmospheric sense of place and time.
Having been influenced by the moody, understated narrative paintings of Edward Hopper's mid-twentieth-century work, I have attempted throughout my career to create cinematic-like paintings that carry a strong narrative aspect.
Using lurid colors, multireflective surfaces, classic dinners, motels, movie theaters, and gritty, neon-lit urban streets as the elements of my work, I attempt to transport the viewer into my unique visual world.
